 Course Information

*Formal Practicum – 10 observed lessons over minimum 8 months

Each formal lesson observation is $200/observed lesson.  

ALL DETAILS OF FORMAL PRACTICUM WILL BE OUTLINED DURING COURSE. This can be completed online or in person.  First 3 observations can be a small/large group delivery.

Other Requirements for Associate Application:  Associate readings provided in course PLUS proof of completion of either Subscribers OGA course (at trainee’s cost, 10 hours) or the Shaywitz’s  Overcoming Dyslexia Yale University Coursera course (free , 12 hours).

A Bachelor’s degree is also required for Associate Level accreditation with the Orton-Gillingham Academy.

THE CLASSROOM EDUCATOR COURSE CAN NO LONGER BE COMBINED TOWARDS THE ASSOCIATE COURSE. THESE COURSES ARE STANDALONE SEPARATE COURSES.

Classroom Educator - 30 coursework hours (small group, whole class)

Associate - 70 coursework hours (1:1 intervention)

This Orton-Gillingham Academy Associate Level course is designed for teachers specifically interested in teaching students with Dyslexia or a Language-Based Learning Disability or Reading/Spelling Difficulty.

Teachers will learn to work in a 1:1 setting using diagnostic and prescriptive strategies to allow for maximum student growth. The course includes all topics :

  • Learning to read and interpret neuropsychological testing

  • Grammar and writing skills

  • Intermediate phonics 

  • Latin morphology

  • Vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency

  • Mock tutoring session with evaluation and critique

  • specialized tutoring intervention practice

  • dyslexia and reading disorders

  • strategies for multi-sensory instruction

  • formal and informal testing

  • how to use information for tutorials and lessons

  • how to plan an Orton-Gillingham lesson

  • fundamental elements of the Orton-Gillingham approach including an introduction to phonology and basic phonics

  • This course is imperative for Special Education teachers working with students who have IEP’s and not achieving proficiency.

Trainees will demonstrate understanding of and ability to teach the following instructional topics:

1. Reading Acquisition in All Learners including the brain basis of reading and the essential components of good reading instruction.
2. Dyslexia
3. The Orton-Gillingham Approach
4. Assessment
5. The Lesson Plan
6. Adaptation of Orton-Gillingham for Classroom Instruction

Your course fee covers all aspects of the workshop including online access to Latin cards and all resources and materials.

For accreditation you are required to complete the OGA Subscribers course or an equivalent (Shaywitz Dyslexia Course on Coursera) and complete assigned reading.
